Saya memang tak faham...Depa ni tak serik-serik! Apa yang saya marahkan ialah apabila terbaca laporan dalam akhbar. Sebelum ini, saya ada mencoretkan perkara yang sama di sini. Ini bukan kali pertama nama institusi berkenaan terpampang dalam akhbar yang mencemar nama institusi khususnya, dan TUDM amnya. Publisiti yang tidak diperlukan oleh mana-mana pihak.Kali pertama ialah pada 27 Januari 2007. 14 orang xkadet telah didapati bersalah oleh mahkamah dan didenda di antara RM1k-RM2k seorang. Sila klik di sini untuk butir penghakiman. Siapa yang rugi? Sendiri buat, sendiri tanggunglah.
Bercakap pasal insiden itu, ketika bermain golf dengan seorang pegawai kanan kolej tersebut, saya telah bertanya tentang kes ragging berkenaan. Beliau menjawab yang membawa maksud bahawa mangsa itu 'lemah' sangat. Kena sikit macam tu dah mengadu seluruh dunia. Saya sungguh kecewa dengan jawapan itu. Saya ajukan soalan apakah tindakan beliau sekira anaknya yang diperlakukan sedemikian. Beliau tidak menjawab.
Mungkin ramai yang tidak mengetahui, ragging yang diagong-agongkan oleh segelintir warga TUDM telah melibatkan kehilangan nyawa. Insiden berlaku di TUDM Kuching...petikan daripada blog di sini...
Ragging 'Court' Case (1982)
The bitter history in the RMAF happened during my service in this base. The death case of Lt M (U) Sugudev Dass due to overwhelmed ragging. This was the worst ragging case ever happened in the RMAF history. Anyway, this case had opened the eyes of the higher management in the RMAF even in the Armed Forces to look into the disgusted activities inherited from whom 'i don't know!. If we say, it was from 'Mat Salleh', I do not believe it because from what I know and I experienced, they are very gentlemen. Many good young officers were victimised by this kind of bad traditions.

Pelaku telah didapati bersalah dan dihukum penjara. Siapa yang rugi? Sendiri buat, sendiri tanggunglah.
Ada seorang hamba Allah yang sungguh berminat untuk berkhidmat dalam salah satu pasukan ATM. Beliau hanya berjaya untuk mengikuti latihan rekrut setelah 3 kali mencuba. Malah, pada hari beliau melaporkan diri di Pusat Latihan, beliau telah menerima tawaran daripada satu agensi kerajaan untuk melapor diri bagi mengikuti latihan asas. Bulat-bulat beliau menolak kerana berkobar-kobar semangat untuk berkhidmat sebagai anggota ATM.
Setelah latihan selama 6 bulan, beliau pun melapor ke unit. Bermulalah mimpi ngeri yang tidak pernah diduganya. Waktu malam di berek memang ditakutinya...ditendang, ditampar dah jadi kebiasaan. Pada hari minggu, kalau tak balik ke kampung, beliau terpaksa menginap di hotel bagi mengelak daripada terus menerus dibuli. Ini kerana pembuli2 lupa dunia kerana mabuk dan berkelakuan seperti binatang ganas. Teruk simangsa didera mereka. Akibat deraan ini, prestasi beliau merudum dan sentiasa murung. Bapa mangsa telah bertanya kepada seorang pegawai polis untuk mendapatkan nasihat. Pegawai berkenaan mengesyorkan buat laporan polis terhadap pembuli-pembuli.
Berita terakhir yang saya terima, pembuli2 tidak lagi tinggal di berek kerana mereka SOP (Staying Out Personnels). Barulah aman kehidupan simangsa.
Tak tahulah saya....Adakah buku ini mencetuskan kegiatan yang bertentangan dengan orang yang bertamadun? Tapi, generasi sekarang ini baca ke buku klasik seperti ini?
Saya harap pihak pengurusan menghayati apa yang dijanjikan oleh xPTU di sini. TUDM tidak perlukan publisiti seperti ini! Ingatlah...Masa sudah berubah. Ketidakpuasan hati akan diluahkan melalui perbagai media massa.

Ragging in the Military must be banned.

I refer to several reports regarding the shocking death of 16-year old Mohammed Naim Mustaqim Mohammed Sobri, a student at the Royal Military College (RMC) who was allegedly beaten to death by five of his colleagues.
The problem is that many senior officers in the military support ragging. In fact, when the torture of a trainee air force pilot Mohd Hazim Ahmad Azam, 19, in Alor Star was raised by the press in February 2007, one retired armed forces chief was quoted as saying that ‘in the military, ragging is seen as a way of instilling discipline, character-building and esprit de corps’.
With this unofficial sanctioning of ragging, the seniors students will gang up against the juniors and under the guise of enforcing discipline and teaching good army traits, subject them at length to all kinds of physical and mental abuse.
I remember a colleague of mine whose son was a student at RMC in the early eighties telling me that the seniors would slap his son, a junior on his forehead till he literally saw stars and fainted. It was called the ‘star treatment’
This so-called military tradition of disciplining errant juniors is nothing more than encouraging mob violence, which, when it gets out of hand results in serious injury and in this case, the tragic death of this teenager.
Those who were responsible for this tragic incident must face the full brunt of the law. Nothing will ever bring back Mohammed Naim nor douse the anguish of his parents. What happened to their son should be a lesson to all others.
The Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst is the oldest and finest officer’s training school in the world. I am told by some of our officers who were trained there, that there is absolutely no ragging of any form and new cadets were treated with respect.
At home, the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) is reputed as the premier college in the country. A colleague and former student of it has told me, that there was the normal orientation for three days but never any form of ragging at MCKK , adding that the juniors were always protected by seniors and teachers.
I am sure the public would also like to know what has happened to the ‘strict guidelines’ on ragging which were introduced by the Defence Ministry following a similar incident in Kuching in the 1980s. In that incident, a trainee pilot died.
A military establishment like the RMC which is supposed to produce our country’s future leaders, captains of our industries and calibre military officers, should ensure that it has zero tolerance to any form of physical violence.
If a military training establishment cannot ensure that, then there is something sadistically and seriously wrong with it. For a start the head of the commandant of the school must roll. The Defence Ministry must act decisively to ban all forms of ragging in the military with immediate effect.

Soon after my letter which also appeared in the NST ("It must be stopped July 04 2010") the Commandant of RMC was replaced by the minister of defense since than I am told ragging at RMC has indeed stopped or so it seems.
However it is sad that this only happened after the death of a few young lives. I however feel that those who rag their fellow cadets/ officers in such a way are sick in the mind and need help.

Ragging? Well, the end may not always justify the means. Behind the façade of ‘welcoming’ new students to college, ‘with the intention of to discipline them’, ragging, in actuality, is a notorious practice wherein the senior students get an excuse to harass their junior counterparts, and more often than not, make them easy targets to satiate their own perverse sadistic pleasures. Apart from sustaining grievous physical injuries, those unfortunate students who succumb to ragging either develop a fear psychosis that haunts them throughout their lives, or worse, quit their college education even before it begins. For any student who slogs day and night to secure admission into a prestigious college, ragging can be his or her worst nightmare come true...
SAD...VERY SAD INDEED! This is a form of psychopathic behaviour and reflection of deviant personalities...an uncivilised act!
Anyway, primary responsibility for curbing ragging rests with the academic institutions and to be dealt with sternness. Thus, the punishment to be meted out has to be exemplary and justifiably harsh to act as a deterrent against recurrence of such incidents.
p/s … ragging is a problem of the students and by the students; and therefore, the solution to it also lies with the students. With ragging becoming rampant in (some) colleges, it is about time that the student community awakens its conscience to this inhuman practice before more and more innocent students become victims of it and before more and more educational institutes are degraded by it… RMC has always been the one which I envy since I was a teenager; no doubt I’m a female ;-D

"School Days" by Tom Brown - my mum had this book - well kept in our home mini library. My siblings and i had read it before. i could still remember the story - its abt bully in a boys' boarding school. The impact...My brothers and I myself, were not keen to go to a boarding school later but then managed to overcome our fears after much being inspired and motivated. We survived being in one! Well, perhaps, as for me, it's a girls' school anyway! As for my brothers, perhaps the seniors had 'succumbed to their human senses'.
