Salam tuan,
We used that nick "sappers" for our army engineers as handed down by the British RE (Royal Engineers), otherwise we are officially called as Combat Engineers. The word sappers came with the long British military history and tradition dated back in times when war was fought to beseige a fortified enemy in a castle, where the military engineers were tasked to build a mean for the attacking infantry to close in onto enemy's position from a safe distant away starting by digging trench lines in the technique called "sap and parallel". The method of digging the trenches by this technique was done in inverted manner - from bottom up - logically that gave a certain degree of protection while working under enemy fire. It was called sapping thus the nick sappers. The modern army don't have anymore of that kind of Seige warfare and our Malaysian sappers definitely had not the history and tradition of fighting battles in that manner other than inheriting the name from a traditional master.
Nevertheless, the nick remains a household name to our army engineers as we are the labour workforce of our military, in peacetime we were also called the JKR of the army. Whatever our friends call us, the sappers are designed to be that element to 'sap" the enemy in time of war. The role of army engineers in war may never be the primadona but the man behind that primadona who is "first in last out".
Saudara FMZam,
Thank you for the history lesson. Now I know how RAJD gets its name 'sappers'. My salute to the sappers - the players behind the scene.
Salam Saudara Nor Ibrahim,
salam tuan,
hanya mereka yang pernah melalui akan menghargai..

Saudara Anonymous,
