Salam Aidil Fitri untuk tuan sekeluaraga saya hulurkan, juga kepada semua saudara saudari pembaca blog ini.
Once upon a time I have a friend named Nawi a TUDM fighter pilot doing the Regimental Fund Course in Port Dickson some 30 years ago. One fateful night we were on a weekend outing in a car driven by another coursemate. The three of us were on our way back from KL to PD via KL-Seremban highway when suddenly the driver jammed the brake to avoid impacting a lorry infront, but the car skidded, turned-turtle a few times then back on its four tyres. Still in motion but somehow out of control, the car darted across the opposite lane before finally hitting an embankment head on and stopped dead. The car was smashed but the driver was stuck in his seat with no injury, saved by the seat belt, I was at the back seat in lying position, saved by the seat cushion with minor head injury caused by the car's interior light, but Nawi was nowhere in the passenger seat. We got out of the car searching and shouting for Nawi in the darkness when we heard a faint voice. He was lying on the grass few metres away groaning and bleeding, his shirt was so soaked in blood.
Nawi was shot out by the impact through the windscreen like a cucumber going thru a mincer because he was not fastened by the seat belt. His whole body must have been scraped by the broken windscreen glass. He looked so gruesome like that chaisaw massacre victim we see in the movie.
With nothing to give him a first aid, all we did was trying to stop passers by. We stopped a few but in that wee hour with so few cars passed by, all refused to help taking a blood soaking victim into their car. Nawi was groaning with pain and we were so desperate to make fast evacuation that we decided to take any car with force this time. Finally (god sent us a saviour) from a distant we saw an incoming car moving slowly and we even heard the driver singing loudly from afar. We stopped him (with intention of not letting him go if he tried to), he was alone and he smelled foul with liquor, but he didn't haste to willingly take us all to Seremban General Hospital.
Nawi survived after many months in hospital and I haven't met him since then but I heard he has recovered. But what we haven't heard at all was that drunk driver who in that drunk situation had performed a selfless act in saving a life in danger without delay. Had he not being drunk, he would have been like other sober Malaysian drivers who would have refused to help an accident victim on our Malaysian roads.
My advise, never drive without your seatbelt on. Selamat berhari raya di kampung tuan2 dan berhati2 di jalan raya. Maaf zahir batin.
Selamat Hari Raya Aidil Fitri kepada Tuan seisi keluarga.
