When the pilot 'yanked' the collective lever, the rotor RPM will 'droop' because there is a momentary delay for the 'Fuel Control Unit' to supply fuel to the engine due the sudden power requirement. Something similar to the 'fuel injection' system in the cars.
This delay resulted in ' ...but too late the instrument panel lites were flashing like a christmas tree.'
